Heroism

This is a very short entry, celebrating one of the worst—and one of the best—days in the history of America.
The best? Yes.
Science fiction stories, in print or on film, have the advantage of presenting a look at the human race from a non-human point of view. One of my favorite sf films is Starman.  The acting by Jeff Bridges and Karen Allen is really good. He was nominated for an Oscar and a Golden Globe and won a Saturn Award for his performance.
Back to the point: Toward the end Bridges' character, the human vessel for the alien visitor says that what he has learned about us is that "you are at your very best when things are worst."
Many individuals at Ground Zero in NYC, and at The Pentagon, and the four passengers of Flight 93 demonstrated their very best.
Our country, too, demonstrated the very best we could be, if only for a little while. Now we are, to quote from Independence Day, "separated by our petty differences..."
In the comic strip B.C. by Mastroianni and Hart this morning was presented what I felt was an outstanding quote: "Heroism is courage despite consequence".

That's it for today. Remember--you can be a hero to someone, and it won't even require risk...just sacrifice.

Happy Labor Day

First off, I want to encourage everyone interested in writing to check out Anne R. Allen's blog (with Ruth Harris) here: http://annerallen.com/ She's a lot of really good ideas lately.
On a personal note, my wife's health is still not good and she has the medical specialists pretty puzzled. We have spent much more time than either of us would like in hospitals or exam rooms. She probably won't set a record for number of CT scans in a calendar year, but she might get an honorable mention.
That, of course, limits the time available for writing. And now football season and the new television season is approaching, so that will limit writing time even more. Other than Bronco football I'm only dedicated to watching the three NCIS shows, now that Castle and CSI are gone, but I may try out one or two new ones. Oh, and Blue Bloods. I'm a Tom Selleck fan.
On writing, there is some good news. One of my favorite short stories (that I've written), "Battle Scars," won an honorable mention in a speculative fiction short story contest back in 2013.  Now Digital Fiction Publishing has accepted this as a reprint in their Quickfic label. "Battle Scars" is one of a few dozen stories in this on-line anthology. It is here: http://digitalfictionpub.com/category/quickfic/  My story appears second on the list. DFP will pay me more for this than I originally won in the contest.
This is the second time DFP has published a reprint of one of my stories. The first, "Transition" was published in June (See my June 4th post).
I really do like "Battle Scars." Next posting I'll explain its origin. In the meantime, I hope you'll all read it and enjoy.
There's also a change in the links to my other published writing on the Right Writes tab.
I wish everyone a happy and safe Labor Day...especially any women giving birth this weekend.
